Juvenile Arthritis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Juvenile Arthritis

Juvenile arthritis can cause your peacefully sleeping child to scream out in pain in the middle of the night. Pain from juvenile arthritis can be a serious issue and should be addressed sooner rather than later.

What is Juvenile Arthritis?

Juvenile Arthritis or Pediatric Rheumatic disease is an auto-immune disorder that affects children under 16 years old. According to a recent survey, approximately 3,000,000 children in the US alone are suffering from Juvenile Arthritis. Many Juvenile Arthritis symptoms can be the same through the different types of this auto-immune disease and the gastrointestinal tract, eyes, muscles, and skin can all be affected.

What Causes it?

At this time, health experts have not pinpointed a specific cause that leads to Juvenile Arthritis (JA) or Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). No evidence has been found that points to certain allergies or foods that could cause this disease. However, some research is beginning to show a genetic predisposition combined with other factors can trigger the onset of Juvenile Arthritis.

What are the Symptoms?

Children experiencing JA could have:

  • Inflammation of the joints
  • Tenderness and pain in joints
  • Weight loss
  • Persistent fever
  • Blurred vision and pain in eyes
  • Fatigue
  • Rash

How is JA/JRA Diagnosed?

To help determine if your child is suffering from Juvenile Arthritis or Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Medical tests should be conducted, such as:

  • X-rays to find out extent of bone damage
  • Complete blood count
  • MRI scans
  • Bone marrow exam
  • Test for Lyme Disease
  • Test for Rheumatoid factor
  • Blood culture to check for bacteria infecting the bloodstream

While currently there is no “cure” for this problem, you can reduce inflammation and help ease the pain of your child is having.

  • Consumption of Turmeric: Turmeric helps regulate your immune system. Eating turmeric in the morning can help boost your child’s immunity. This may help him/her fight against several autoimmune disorders like Juvenile Arthritis.
  • Heat and Cold Compression: Applying heat and cold compression on the affected area can relieve muscle pain, swelling, and stiffness.
  • Gentle Massage: Aromatherapy oils like eucalyptus oil can be gently massaged on the affected area which can relax the joints and also ease the pain.
